2020: How to Grasp Investment Trends in the Current Epidemic Situation

Grasping Investment Trends Amid the Pandemic

Faced with global market panic triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak, real-economy activity has weakened sharply, with the crisis spreading from supply to demand and further destabilizing markets. Recent data show U.S. unemployment claims surged to 3.28 million — nearly four times the prior record.

The securities markets have not been spared. Beginning March 7 and over the following weeks, U.S. stock indices triggered the trading-halt mechanism multiple times.

In real estate, since March there have been notable stalls and delays in property transactions and new commercial / residential leases. From mid-February to March 23, apartment REIT prices have fallen approximately 40%.

This unprecedented public health crisis remains full of unknowns — how long will it last, and how deep will its impact be? After the U.S. central bank cut rates and a $2 trillion rescue package was passed, what changes will follow in currency, equity, and real estate markets? How can investors capture effective windows and rationally allocate assets for productive investment?
