Following the strong momentum of previous years, the 2026 competition continued to expand in both scale and influence. Approximately 170 biotechnology companies globally, primarily from the United States and China, participated in this year's selection process, with 17 companies advancing to the final pitch competition held in Boston. Most finalist companies were in preclinical or clinical-stage development, reflecting the event's continued focus on translational medicine, commercialization, and globally scalable healthcare innovation.

Held at Fish & Richardson P.C. in Boston's Seaport District, the competition showcased an exceptional concentration of cutting-edge biomedical technologies spanning programmable RNA therapeutics, in vivo CAR-T engineering, gene therapy, immunometabolism, AI-driven drug discovery, molecular glue therapeutics, precision oncology, regenerative medicine, organoid-enabled translational platforms, and advanced drug delivery technologies. The increasing maturity of the participating companies highlighted the accelerating convergence of biotechnology innovation, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine.

BCIC, one of the most active international healthcare innovation communities connecting biotech entrepreneurs and global investors, continues to play an increasingly important role in fostering cross-border innovation and commercialization. As a Massachusetts-registered nonprofit organization serving nearly 10,000 professionals across venture capital, finance, healthcare, and technology industries, BCIC has spent years building a global ecosystem connecting startups, pharmaceutical companies, investors, incubators, and research institutions. Since launching its biomedical pitch competition platform in 2022, BCIC has helped participating companies secure significant visibility, strategic partnerships, and financing opportunities across international markets, with award-winning companies collectively securing over $300 million in funding.

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Min Yi, President of BCIC, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Weng-Li Yoon, Associate Director (Therapeutics), Life and Health Technology at HKSTP. Dr. Yoon shared insights into Hong Kong's rapidly evolving biotechnology ecosystem and discussed HKSTP's expanding role in supporting translational medicine, clinical development, and global healthcare innovation. As one of Asia's leading biotechnology hubs, HKSTP continues to accelerate commercialization through funding initiatives, innovation infrastructure, clinical translation support, and international strategic partnerships.

Several major technology themes emerged throughout this year's competition. RNA therapeutics and programmable RNA engineering represented one of the strongest trends across participating companies, with multiple startups presenting innovations involving circular RNA, mRNA-LNP delivery, oligonucleotide therapeutics, and RNA-guided immune engineering. AI-enabled therapeutic discovery also remained a dominant focus, with companies increasingly integrating machine learning, computational biology, and generative design into drug discovery pipelines.

In addition, next-generation immunotherapy approaches continued to attract significant investor and industry attention. Multiple finalist companies presented innovative strategies involving in vivo CAR-T programming, immune metabolism modulation, bispecific immune engagers, and molecular glue technologies designed to target historically "undruggable" disease pathways. Several companies also showcased highly differentiated translational platforms focused on fibrosis, metabolic diseases, neurodegeneration, ophthalmology, regenerative medicine, and organoid-enabled disease modeling.
