绝大多数新 biotech 公司都源自大学科研所产生的全新发现与发明，其中多数由联邦资金资助。此类研究产生的专利由大学持有，并通过大学授予新创公司专利许可的方式赋予权利。
本次研讨会将探讨 MIT 如何通过其 Technology Licensing Office 管理专利申请与授权，并通过众多 "Innovation" 项目鼓励教师与学生创业。数百家新 biotech 公司由 MIT 及其附属 Whitehead Institute 孵化而出，包括 Alnylam、BluebirdBio、Momenta 与 Ginko Bioworks 等本地知名公司。
Lita Nelsen 在执掌 MIT 的 Technology Licensing Office 25 年以上之后正式退休。她目前担任多家 biotech 公司的顾问或董事会成员，并在 MIT 的 Sandbox 学生创业项目中担任导师，同时也是早期 venture capital 公司 GoodGrowth Capital 的顾问。她还以远程方式为 The University of Hong Kong 讲授 technology licensing 课程。
