絕大多數新 biotech 公司都源自大學科研所产生的全新發現與發明，其中多數由聯邦資金資助。此類研究产生的專利由大學持有，並通過大學授予新創公司專利許可的方式賦予權利。
本次研討會將探討 MIT 如何通過其 Technology Licensing Office 管理專利申請與授權，並通過眾多 "Innovation" 項目鼓勵教師與學生創業。數百家新 biotech 公司由 MIT 及其附屬 Whitehead Institute 孵化而出，包括 Alnylam、BluebirdBio、Momenta 與 Ginko Bioworks 等本地知名公司。
Lita Nelsen 在執掌 MIT 的 Technology Licensing Office 25 年以上之後正式退休。她目前担任多家 biotech 公司的顧問或董事會成員，並在 MIT 的 Sandbox 學生創業項目中担任導師，同時也是早期 venture capital 公司 GoodGrowth Capital 的顧問。她還以遠程方式為 The University of Hong Kong 講授 technology licensing 課程。
